Use of cookies in Qube

USE OF COOKIES

What are Cookies?

A cookie is a small file, typically of letters and numbers, downloaded on to a device when the user accesses certain websites. Cookies allow a website to recognise a user’s device. The cookies used by Qube fall into 3 different categories: those used by Moodle software, those used by Google Analytics, and those used by Adobe Flash (Flash cookies).

You can control which cookies are stored on your computer (see below) but if you block the essential Moodle cookies then Qube will not work properly on your computer.

Moodle Cookies

The MoodleSession cookie is essential for Qube to work properly. You must allow this cookie into your browser to provide continuity and maintain your Qube login from page to page. When you log out or close the browser this cookie is destroyed (in your browser and on the server).

The MoodleSessiontest cookie is an essential cookie used to check if cookies are working correctly on the page.

The MOODLEID cookie is a persistent cookie which just remembers your username within the browser. This means when you return to this site the username field on the login page will be already filled out for you. It is safe to reject this cookie (see below) - you will just have to retype your username every time you log in.

Google Analytics Cookies

Qube uses Google Analytics software which places cookies on a user's device to provide us with aggregated usage data of Qube.

Google Analytics uses first-party cookies to track visitor interactions. The cookies are used to store information, such as what time the current visit occurred, whether the visitor has been to the site before, and what site referred the visitor to the web page. These cookies do not collect information that identifies a visitor.

Analytical cookies allow us to count the number of visitors to Qube, and to see how users move around the site. This helps us to improve the quality of Qube. No personal information is collected or retained by means of the cookies used to generate this statistical information. Information on the cookies used by the default configuration and use of Google Analytics is available here: https://developers.google.com/analytics/resources/concepts/gaConceptsCookies

Flash cookies

If you have Adobe Flash installed on your computer (most computers do), small files may be stored on your computer by websites, including Qube, which contain Flash media such as video clips. These files are known as Local Shared Objects (LSOs) or Flash cookies.

How to Control Cookies on your Computer

Users can set their browsers to accept or reject all, or certain, cookies. All recent versions of popular browsers give users a level of control over cookies.

The exact procedure depends on the browser you are using:

Internet Explorer: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/internet-explorer/delete-manage-cookies#ie=ie-11-win-7

Firefox: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/enable-and-disable-cookies-website-preferences

Chrome: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95647?hl=en

Safari: http://help.apple.com/safari/mac/8.0/#/sfri11471

Flash cookies cannot be controlled in your browser, but Adobe's website offers tools to control Flash cookies on your computer and users of the Firefox browser can also get an add-on to detect and delete Flash cookies.

Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on

As a user you can prevent Google Analytics collecting traffic log data. To provide website visitors with more choice on how their data is collected Google Analytics has developed the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. The add-on communicates with the Google Analytics JavaScript (ga.js) to indicate that information about the website visit should not be sent to Google Analytics.

If you want to opt out, download and install the add-on for your current web browser, it is available from https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout and enables a user to opt out. The Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on is available for Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari and Opera.

Please remember that by not allowing Google Analytics to use cookies, this will prevent us learning what users like or don’t like about Qube and how to improve it.
